Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to own a piano to take lessons?

Not at all, though it is important to have access to a piano or keyboard. You might be surprised at the number places that you can get access to the instrument, including rehearsal studios, local music shops, schools, colleges and universities where you can rent a piano/keyboard for an hour or two each week.

I can't read music, is that a problem?

No, not a problem at all - no proir knowledge needed before your first lesson and I am happy to teach you how to read music as we go.

Where are the lessons based?

I am able to hold lessons at my student's homes across Swansea or at my own, home tuition space based on Windsor Street, Uplands, Swansea. My home teaching space is a great place to learn to play the piano, with all the resources that we will need for our lessons. My full address will be provided upon the booking of your first lesson - click on the map below to bring up my rough location on Google Maps.

I only/don't want to do grades - is that possible?

Yes, absolutely - the lessons we have will be shaped around your ambitions on the instrument. I have taught many students grades over the years, with a great success rate, however, a lot of my students also learn the piano for their own enjoyment - there is therefore no compulsion to do grades.

I am left handed, can I still play the piano?

Of course you can - I have taught quite a few left handed students over the years so have a trick or two up my sleeve that can really help such students get to grips with the piano.

I am unsure if I will be able to commit to practising at home - can I still take lessons?

Yes, you are still welcome to come for lessons though you will have to put your progress into perspective as it will take much longer to develop your musical ability. It is also worth asking yourself if you can really commit to learning to play the piano if you are unable to find time to practise - from experience often students that start out with that perspective quickly find they are unable to make lessons due to work deadlines etc. so it is better to understand your level of committment from day one.

Do you do gift vouchers?

Yes, I certainly do - get in touch for more information.
